Martinez überrascht im Baskenland.
Die heutige Etappe der Baskenland Rundfahrt sah mit Martinez von den Ineos Grenadieren einen überraschenden Sprintsieger. Bisher war der Kolumbianer eher als Kletterer bekannt. Jetzt stand der Mann aber im Rampenlicht. Er besiegte im Sprint Julian Alaphilippe vom Team Quickstep. Der hatte um eine Reifenbreite Pech. Auch der Tigersprung half da nicht weiter.

Zuvor sah man eine große Ausreißergruppe. Die Jungs hatten bis zu 7 Minuten Vorsprung. Am Ende blieb nur einer übrig. Pierre Lafay von Team Cofidis ging mit über einer Minute Vorsprung in die letzten 10 Kilometer.
Doch das Team UAE hatte anderes vor. Es spannte seine Leute verschärft ein, um den Ausreißer zu stellen. Man arbeitete für Diego Ulissi. Doch der patzte auf den letzten Metern. Pierre Lafay wird sich über die sinnlose Tat des teams gewundert haben. Am roten Lappen wurde er von der Meute gestellt und ließ resigniert an sich vorbeiziehen,
Im Sprint kam es dann zum Duell zwischen Alaphippe und Martinez. Diego Ulissi versuchte es auch. Musste sich aber mit dem 3. Platz zufrieden geben. Primoz Roglic bleibt weiterhin der Leader der Rundfahrt.
